Biogas based electricity generation
Funding: AID, Own fund Vigyan Ashram is trying to generate electricity locally using dungless biogas. Idea is to develop complete energy chain from production of feed, producing biogas, running a generator and distribution of electricity. This is an attempt to develop a model of producing electricity locally, on small scale, and consume it within a short distance. The modest 5 kW generator would be run for 8 hours a day. The electricity would be utilized to run the engines, the water pump, and to electrify the hostel campus domestic lighting, at Vigyan Ashram, Pabal, Pune.

Current Status: We faced several problems with engine like over heating etc. We also found it requires lot of maintenance. The work was shared with M/S Gangotri Energy Pvt Ltd. They have worked on it further and developed complete technology for biogas based electricity generation. Gangotri has named first biogas plant in Jawhar as ‘Dr.Kalbag biogas project’. Now the technology is available through them. Biogas at Vigyan Ashram is regularly used for cooking.
